A Nigerian gambler, Lukman Teriba, claims he won N16.7 million from a N1,000 bet on 37 games with BetNaija but received only N3 million in payouts.
Teriba’s case has sparked outrage within the betting community and has led to questions about the reliability of BetNaija, a prominent betting platform.
Teriba explains that he accurately predicted 37 game outcomes with a N1,000 bet, which should have resulted in N16.7 million in winnings. Yet when he went to collect his winnings at the betting shop, he was told the money had already been withdrawn.
Undeterred, Teriba took his complaint to BetNaija’s main office, where the management intervened, eventually convincing their agent to release the winnings. However, even after reaching an agreement, the agent only transferred N3 million to Teriba’s account, far less than the N16.7 million he was owed.
Online critics note that this isn’t the first time BetNaija has been accused of not paying winnings to successful gamblers. There are allegations that the National Lottery Regulatory Commission hasn’t effectively regulated betting companies, allowing them to continue such practices.
Teriba’s case has revived discussions about the need for stronger regulation and oversight of the betting industry in Nigeria. Many are urging for stricter enforcement to ensure that betting companies pay winnings in full without unnecessary delays or attempts to avoid payment.
