It was with intense sadness and disappointment that I received the news of the passing of Mr Elias Ugwu, in the hands of men of the Nigerian Police Force, Kogi State Police Command. Prior to his brutal killing, Mr. Ugwu was a lawyer who had his practice in Nsuka, Enugu State.
Mr Elias Ugwu’s avoidable killing was brought to my attention following a statement issued by the Kogi State Police Command and reported to have been signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Command, SP Williams Anya.
The Nigerian Police Force must be sanitised, and they must carry out their duty to every Nigerian with due care and professionalism.
The acknowledgment by the police that they fired the fatal shots only intensifies the seriousness of the situation. It is unacceptable that Elias Ugwu, who showed bravery and compassion by paying ransom for his kidnapped relative, met such a tragic end. The police’s careless shooting without proper verification or adherence to due process reflects a clear disregard for human life and legal principles.
The death of Elias Ugwu, a respected member of our legal community, was both tragic and indefensible. His life was taken in circumstances that are difficult to comprehend or justify. The police’s admission that they fired the fatal shots only exacerbates the gravity of the situation.
Elias Ugwu was not a criminal but a committed member of the legal profession, dedicated to justice and compassion. His untimely death underscores the importance of a thorough investigation into the events leading to his killing and the need for accountability.
In this time of sorrow, it is imperative that we seek justice for Elias Ugwu and his mourning family. The relevant authorities must act swiftly to identify and hold accountable those responsible for this reprehensible act of violence.
As we grieve the loss of Elias Ugwu, let us also honor his legacy of bravery and compassion. May his memory serve as a catalyst for positive change in our society, and may he rest in peace. Amen.
