Spain has requested Argentina’s President Javier Milei to publicly apologize for his remarks about Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s wife, triggering a diplomatic crisis. The Spanish government has already withdrawn its ambassador from Buenos Aires and plans to summon the Argentine ambassador to convey the seriousness of the situation and demand an apology.
“I am going to explain to him the gravity of the situation and I am going to demand again a public apology by Javier Milei,” Albares said.
Albares said would not exclude the rupture of diplomatic ties with Argentina if no apology was made.
“We clearly do not want to take these measures but if there is no public apology, we will do it,” the minister said.
Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated that diplomatic ties with Argentina might be severed if no apology is issued, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Milei’s comments, made at a conference organized by Spain’s far-right Vox party, targeted socialism and indirectly criticized Sanchez’s wife, Begona Gomez, prompting outrage from the Spanish government.
Milei’s government remains defiant, refusing to apologize and even suggesting that the Spanish government owes an apology instead. The tensions escalated when Milei visited Spain without arranging meetings with Sanchez or King Felipe VI and criticized socialism in his speeches, describing it as “satanic.”
Milei, known for his “anarcho-capitalist” beliefs, has implemented austerity measures in Argentina, aiming to eliminate the country’s significant public debt. His attendance at the Madrid conference, along with other European far-right leaders like Marine Le Pen, Viktor Urban, and Giorgia Meloni, further fueled the diplomatic turmoil.
