The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to work together with the National Assembly in the ongoing process of revising the 1999 Constitution.

During a meeting with the national leadership of the NBA in Abuja, Akpabio emphasized the importance of modernizing outdated laws and welcomed the expertise of lawyers in this endeavor.

Expressing his satisfaction with the visit, Akpabio highlighted the need to update laws to reflect current realities, acknowledging that many existing laws are obsolete and fail to address contemporary needs.

“We have robust plans to tinker with some of the laws that we met on ground particularly those that are not meeting the current realities. Some of our laws are analogue and do not meet the aspirations of today,” he stated.

Akpabio also urged the NBA to maintain the professional standards by eliminating unqualified practitioners, emphasizing the importance of both education and ethical conduct among lawyers.

In response, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau affirmed the association’s readiness to support the Senate in its efforts towards national development, commending the Senate President’s leadership and expressing solidarity with the Senate.
