The Senate has urged the judiciary in all states to establish mobile courts to enforce the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act, aiming to address the issue of out-of-school children nationwide.
Additionally, it directed its Committee on Education to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Education to tackle the problem effectively and reduce the number of out-of-school children.
Furthermore, the Senate called upon the Ministry of Education and related bodies, along with NGOs, to develop new strategies for combating the out-of-school children crisis.
They emphasized the importance of education through national awareness campaigns and set a two-year deadline for implementing the UBE Act.
The Senate also recommended that governments at all levels implement targeted interventions to remove barriers to quality education, particularly poverty and insecurity.
These decisions were made following the consideration and adoption of a motion titled “Compelling need to tackle the challenge of Out of School Children in Nigeria.”
Senator Idiat Oluranti Adebule highlighted the alarming statistics of out-of-school children in Nigeria, citing a UNESCO report and stressing the urgent need for action.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio proposed measures similar to those implemented in Akwa Ibom state, emphasizing the importance of education and enforcing compliance with the UBE Act.
Other senators echoed the urgency of addressing the out-of-school children crisis, emphasizing the link between illiteracy, poverty, and crime. They urged all Nigerian children to have access to education and criticized certain state governors for hindering efforts to make basic education free and compulsory by failing to contribute required funds.
