Olumide Akpata, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), clinched victory in the Labour Party (LP) primary election for the upcoming Edo governorship race, securing 316 votes to surpass his competitors.
The eagerly anticipated Edo governorship election is scheduled for September 21.
Prior to the primary, Akpata had expressed concerns to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding potential manipulation within his party’s selection process for the gubernatorial candidate.
In a letter dated February 18 addressed to Mahmood Yakubu, INEC’s chairman, Akpata raised alarm over alleged plans by the party leadership to impose a candidate without due regard for transparency and accountability.
Despite his efforts to engage party officials on the matter, Akpata remained dissatisfied with the lack of responsiveness from the party leadership.
Responding to Akpata’s apprehensions, the LP assured on Tuesday of its commitment to conducting a transparent and fair primary election, affirming its dedication to providing equal opportunities for all aspirants to compete on a level playing field.
