The Presidency refutes allegations of a political vendetta against former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, dismissing the idea as misplaced, according to the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale. Ngelale emphasizes that Emefiele, who faces 14 new charges from the Federal Government related to corruption, was not even part of the political primary, challenging the perception of political bias.

The Special Adviser’s statements follow the Federal Government’s escalation of legal action against Emefiele, introducing charges such as criminal breach of trust, forgery, and conspiracy. These accusations emerge from a comprehensive report submitted by a special investigator, shedding light on financial improprieties during Emefiele’s tenure. His removal from office in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu further intensifies the legal battle.

In addition to the federal charges, the Nigerian Senate has initiated an investigation into the N30tn Ways and Means loans facilitated by the CBN during Emefiele’s governorship.

This probe seeks to unveil the details of fund acquisition and utilization, with early findings suggesting that the reckless spending of the loan has contributed significantly to the nation’s current food and security crises.
