In anticipation of the 18th Annual International Business Law Conference hosted by the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL), the Abuja Fundraising Committee and the regulatory clinic team embarked on a significant initiative. This involved a pivotal courtesy visit to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), aimed at fostering awareness for the conference and exploring potential avenues for collaboration.
The NFIU warmly welcomed our delegation, providing a platform to highlight the NBA-SBL’s initiatives and to identify mutual interests between both organizations.
Central to our discussions was the imperative to educate legal professionals on the reporting standards mandated by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). These international Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) standards, aligned with United Nations frameworks, underscored the necessity for robust compliance measures.
Given Nigeria’s current placement on the FATF “grey list” due to vulnerabilities in its financial sector, combating money laundering and terrorist financing emerged as urgent priorities. The NFIU reaffirmed its commitment to swiftly addressing these issues to facilitate Nigeria’s removal from this list.

The legal framework guiding these efforts is encapsulated in Chapter 2 of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023 – Guidelines and Rules on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism for Legal Practitioners. This underscores the pivotal role of lawyers in spearheading these anti-financial crime endeavors.
To fortify the partnership between NBA-SBL and NFIU, both parties agreed on several actionable steps. Notably, the NFIU will actively participate in knowledge-sharing sessions during the NBA-SBL conference. Furthermore, plans are underway to organize a joint conference by the close of 2024, aimed at deepening collaboration and enhancing awareness on legal compliance issues.
This visit marks a crucial step forward in aligning regulatory efforts with legal practice, ensuring a robust and compliant financial ecosystem in Nigeria. As we look ahead to the NBA-SBL conference, these initiatives promise to foster greater understanding and action in combating financial crimes within our legal community and beyond.
