NGF Asserts Importance of State Policing in Enhancing National Security

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), comprising 36 state governors, stresses the urgency of prioritizing the establishment of state police during the ongoing revision of the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly to rectify inherent flaws in the country’s security structure.

A resolution highlighted in a communique from a virtual meeting chaired by Governor Abdul Rahman Abdul Rasaq of Kwara State underscores the need for collaboration between lawmakers, state governors, political party leaders, traditional rulers, and faith-based organizations in this constitutional revision process.

In light of recent violent incidents, such as the tragic loss of military personnel in Delta State, the governors express condolences and condemn such acts, observing a moment of silence for the deceased. Additionally, they call for a fair minimum wage, considering individual state circumstances and the ability of both government and private sector employers to pay.

Concerns raised by the United States Embassy regarding illegal inter-country adoption of Nigerian children by US citizens prompt the NGF to pledge engagement with relevant government agencies to address these issues. Furthermore, discussions center on progress in implementing business-friendly reforms supported by the World Bank’s State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) program, with a call for governors to leverage available resources to foster economic growth.

The NGF also receives updates on health sector initiatives and reaffirms its commitment to achieving the objectives outlined in various health and nutrition programs.
