Ex-minister, Enugu Senator, Others dump Ex-minister, Enugu Senator, Others dump PDP
A significant number of individuals affiliated with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State have made the decision to switch their allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC), accompanied by their supporters.
Among those who formally announced their departure from the PDP and embraced the APC during a reception at the party’s headquarters in Enugu were prominent figures such as Senator Chukwuka Utazi, former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Anti-corruption and Financial Crimes, and Ambassador Fidelia Njeze, previously Nigeria’s Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
Additionally, notable members including Davidson Nnamani, Juliet Oloto, Chika Idoko, Jonathan Eze, Mr. Umunna Ugwu, and Ezi-Obodo Idodo of the Young Progressives Party have also aligned themselves with the APC.
The event marking this mass defection saw the attendance of key APC leaders, including Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, who also serves as the APC leader in Enugu State.
Emma Eneukwu, APC National Deputy Chairman South, and Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC National Vice Chairman South East, were also present.
Senator Utazi, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023, articulated his rationale for joining the APC, emphasizing its perceived role as the pathway to achieving Igbo presidency.
He expressed his conviction that active involvement in national politics, particularly within the APC, is essential for the advancement of Igbo interests at the highest echelons of governance.
In his own words, Utazi stated, “As a national politician, I want to join politics at the center. What we are doing in Enugu cannot take Enugu anywhere.
I resigned from PDP. Nothing is coming to Enugu. If you are not at the center, you are failing. The only way to get Igbo presidency is to serve as a servant at the APC. I want to serve in the party. APC is the only way to join the mainstream national.
We will ensure that members join the party. With the party discipline, we will go far.”
Upon welcoming the defectors into the APC fold, Eneukwu admonished them to refrain from engaging in activities detrimental to the interests of the party, cautioning against any form of anti-party conduct and stressing the importance of maintaining party discipline for the collective advancement of their political aspirations.
