The attempt by former President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the ongoing N29 billion money laundering trial of former Adamawa Governor Murtala Nyako was reportedly hindered by the political ambitions of ex-Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, as alleged by former AGF Michael Aondoakaa.

Buhari supposedly tasked Malami with collaborating with the EFCC to explore settling the case out of court due to Nyako’s age, but political interests, particularly Malami’s desire to become governor of Kebbi State, interfered with the negotiation process.

Aondoakaa clarified that while the prosecution claimed the defendants sought a plea bargain, it wasn’t necessarily an admission of guilt but rather an attempt to resolve the matter. However, Malami’s unavailability due to his political aspirations obstructed progress in the negotiations.

Nyako, who served as Governor of Adamawa State from 2011 to 2015, along with his son Abdulaziz and others, faced a 37-count charge including money laundering and diversion of funds, to which they pleaded not guilty.

During the court proceedings, Nyako alleged multiple assassination attempts but remained silent on the identities of the perpetrators.

He expressed skepticism towards the charges and accused his enemies of fabricating frivolous accusations against him.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the trial judge urged Nyako to remain calm, reminding him of the opportunity to present his defense.

After their pleas were recorded, the defendants’ legal team requested to maintain the previously granted bail, which the court allowed, adjourning the trial until May 10.

The case, which began in 2015, has seen various judicial transitions and legal maneuvers, including unsuccessful appeals against the prosecution’s allegations.

Atolagbe outlined the different categories of charges against the defendants, ranging from money laundering to conspiracy, under various sections of the law.
