A Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan terminated the 14-year union between John Akinwumi, a taxi driver, and his estranged spouse, Toyin.

Akinwumi requested the court to dissolve his lengthy marriage with Toyin, citing recurring domestic abuse and spiritual discord as reasons.

Addressing the court, chaired by Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, Akinwumi revealed his wife’s neglect during his severe illness and the deteriorating state of their relationship after just one year of marriage. Despite receiving support from Toyin’s relatives to start a transportation business, constant conflict ensued due to a lack of affection.

Seeking separation, Akinwumi expressed his belief that the marriage was doomed from the start, pledging to provide a monthly allowance of N25,000 for their two children.

In opposition, Toyin professed her enduring love for her husband, lamenting his abandonment of her and their children. She refuted most of the accusations against her but acknowledged Akinwumi’s sporadic financial support for their daughters.

In her verdict, Akintayo recognized the validity of their traditional marriage through the payment of bride price. Acknowledging Akinwumi’s declaration of lost affection, she dissolved the marriage and instructed both parties to maintain peace. Additionally, she issued an order restraining Toyin from harassing or interfering with Akinwumi’s personal life.
