A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Jennifer Elohor, has shared a distressing account of her experience with operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group, who allegedly invaded her residence, physically assaulted her, and forcefully took her and other corps members away.

In an interview with media personality Aprokoking, Elohor explained that the incident took place on July 13, around 5 p.m., at their lodge in Anambra State.

According to her, she and her colleagues were inside their apartment when they heard a loud and persistent knock.

“At first, we assumed the sound came from our neighbours’ apartment since the building has three floors with multiple flats. But the banging became more forceful, and before I could reach the door, it was kicked open,” she recalled.

Elohor narrated that a masked man wielding a gun barged into their apartment without wearing any uniform or showing identification.

“At first, I thought he was an armed robber until he ordered everyone to step outside. I tried to explain that we were corps members and even offered to show my NYSC identity card. My colleagues did the same, but they ignored us,” she recounted.

She further alleged that the men ransacked their rooms, confiscated their phones and laptops, and subjected them to rough handling.

“They pushed us downstairs aggressively, almost throwing me off the staircase. They kept questioning why, as a woman, I dared to challenge them. It was only outside that we saw their vehicle and realised they were operatives of the Anambra Vigilante Group,” she said.

The corps member stated that when they attempted to contact their lodge owner or NYSC officials, the operatives intensified their assault.

“They beat me up, tore my clothes, and struck one of my colleagues with an iron rod for pleading on my behalf. They forced me into their vehicle, holding me by the neck, slapping me, and threatening to destroy our phones if we reached out to anyone,” she narrated.

A video of the assault, which went viral on Tuesday, showed armed vigilante operatives invading the corps members’ lodge, accusing them of being internet fraudsters despite seeing their NYSC uniforms and identity cards. The footage also showed the female corps member being brutally beaten while crying out for help.

The video sparked massive outrage across social media, with Nigerians strongly condemning the vigilantes’ actions and calling for justice.

In response to the public backlash, the Anambra State Government confirmed that the perpetrators had been identified, arrested, and detained. It further announced that the operatives involved had been dismissed from the vigilante service.
