At the age of 81, President Biden has decided to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, creating upheaval in the contest. This decision comes after mounting pressure from his closest allies, who expressed concerns about his age and health affecting his ability to challenge former President Donald J. Trump.
Following weeks of firm refusals to exit the race, Biden eventually conceded after facing overwhelming negative polling, urgent appeals from Democratic leaders, and indications that financial backers were no longer supporting his campaign.

Biden’s withdrawal clears the way for Vice President Kamala Harris and other potential contenders, such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, to quickly start their campaigns for the nomination before the Democratic National Convention in mid-August.

In a statement, Biden expressed his belief that stepping down is in the best interest of both his party and the nation, and he will focus on his presidential duties for the remainder of his term. He plans to address the public later in the week.
MY FELLOW DEMOCRATS, I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO ACCEPT THE NOMINATION AND TO FOCUS ALL MY ENERGIES ON MY DUTIES AS PRESIDENT FOR THE REMAINDER OF MY TERM. MY VERY FIRST DECISION AS THE PARTY NOMINEE IN 2020 WAS TO PICK KAMALA HARRIS AS MY VICE PRESIDENT. AND IT’S BEEN THE BEST… PIC.TWITTER.COM/X8DNVUIMJV
